The Association has three categories of membership for practitioners and the additional categories of Friend and Institution.

Professional Heritage Practitioner (PHP):

A PHP is a practitioner who has demonstrated training and experience in the sector. PHPs may be responsible for narrow or specialist parts of assessments as well as having broad experience and are able to take overall responsibility for integrating specialist work into comprehensive assessments. PHPs are experienced enough to be engaged in any part of a wide range of heritage resource-related projects.

Candidate Members:

A Candidate is a member who is active in the heritage field and is engaged in study and/or working in the sector but who has insufficient qualifications and/or experience to be recognised as a fully-fledged PHP.

Associate Members:

An Associate is a member who works in the field but does not satisfy the academic criteria required to become a Professional or Candidate Member.

Friend:

Members of the public who support the aims and objectives of the Association can join as Friends. Friends are invited to seminars and receive news of developments in the sector that are sent to members, but they have no status as practitioners.

Institutions:

Any Association or Body may join the Association as an Institutional Member, subject to their support for the aims and objectives of the Association. Institutional members are invited to seminars and receive news of developments in the sector that are sent to members, but they have no status as practitioners.

APPLYING FOR MEMBERSHIP

On application to join the Association (see attached application form), potential members list their qualifications and other relevant data and pay an application fee. The applications are assessed by the Association's Membership Committee, which decides whether professional, candidate  or associate status is recommended. The decision is ratified by EXCO and the new member is then registered once they have paid their membership fee.

MEMBERSHIP GUIDELINES:

The required formal academic training, specialist training, work experience and working knowledge of current heritage resource-, planning- and environment-related policy, legislation and management for membership is outlined as per the attached letter and in the Association's Membership Guidelines which can be downloaded from this site or obtained from the secretary -  info@aphp.org.za
